Vibe: An antique cedarwood chest, the bottom strewn with potpourri made of rose petals and chai spices

Chai Antique opens with very sweet and strong rose and suede notes. It takes a few minutes for the spices to warm things up; once they enter the picture, they meld with the rose accord to give a carnation effect.

As the wear continues, Chai Antique smells milkier, and the fragrance becomes more gourmand than atmospheric. Instead of a trunk filled with potpourri, it becomes a simmer pot full of milk, rose petals, and chai spices. The spices, by the way, are the same ones I use in Chai Ultime: cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, allspice, clove, and cinnamon bark.

A note on potpourri...a lot of indie perfumes, particularly ones with rose notes, are written off as smelling like potpourri. This is something I've tried to avoid in my other rose perfumes, but I wanted to lean into the potpourri for this one. I made it intentionally smell musty, spiced, and very sweet, walking the edge of cloying but not crossing the line into sickly sweet.
